FAQ: Why should I convert my inventory?
This article applies to Greenbits.
When you convert inventory in Greenbits, you can create unit-based inventory from weight-based/bulk inventory or combine unit-based inventory. This can make sales of items like pre-packaged flower and pre-rolls easier and more efficient.
Oregon: convert inventory in Greenbits if you want to create pre-packaged flower units, such as eighths, from bulk flower. To create pre-rolls, follow this process instead.
Why should I convert my inventory?
You can't always control the unit of measure that a vendor uses when transferring inventory to you in the state traceability system.
For example, let's say you accept a delivery of 100 individual cartridges that are a half-gram each, but the vendor transfers this inventory to you in the traceability system as 50 grams instead of 100 units.
Because this inventory exists as grams in the traceability system, you have to report sales and adjustments in terms of grams also, even though the inventory exists physically as pre-packaged units and is sold, priced, and audited in terms of units/"each."
Converting this 50 grams of inventory into 100 half-gram units bridges this gap, allowing you to manage this inventory in a way that matches how you run your store, while still reporting sales and adjustments of this inventory in terms of the original grams measurement.
Converting to combine existing smaller units into larger units can also come in handy. A vendor could, for example, transfer you 20 five-packs of pre-rolls but enter it into the traceability system as 100 individual pre-rolls. Or maybe you've created a large number of pre-rolls in-house and you plan to sell some of them individually, and some of them in three-packs or five-packs. Combining individual units into packs can provide a similar benefit.
The bottom line: converting allows you to organize and manage your digital inventory in a way that matches your physical inventory.
What are the benefits of converting inventory?
Converting weight-based inventory into units can simplify your workflows in the following ways:
With conversions |
Without conversions | |
Pricing |
Enter the per-unit price in Back Office. That's it! |
Enter the per-gram price in Back Office. This means taking your desired per-unit price and dividing it by the weight of each unit. For instance:
|
Selling |
Scan each unit's barcode label and tap Charge. Greenbits automatically reports the sale in terms of total weight. No mental math or manual entry required! |
Scan the barcode label. Manually enter the per-unit weight into the Register. Repeat for each unit you're selling. This opens the door for human error. |
Labeling |
Print labels from Back Office during the conversion process. Pre-label each unit so it's ready to go when someone wants to buy it. | Print labels from the Register after completing a sale. If the sale includes multiple different items, you'll need to be extra careful to apply the correct label to the correct item, because all of the labels print at once. |
Auditing |
Scan each unit into your audit document, or hand-count and enter the total number of units. | Hand-count each unit, then multiply by the weight per unit and enter this total weight into the audit document. |
Adjustments |
Adjust according to the number of units. Greenbits automatically reports the adjustment in terms of total weight. No mental math or manual entry required! |
Take the number of units you're adjusting and multiply by the weight per unit to find the total weight. Adjust according to the total weight. |
Although converting from weight to units is the most common scenario, the benefits also extend to combining units into packs. Let's use three-packs of pre-rolls as an example:

Pricing |
Enter the price of the three-pack in Back Office. This makes it easy to offer a discount on the three-pack vs. the price of the individual joints multiplied by 3. For instance: $5.00 per pre-roll, or $14.00 for the three-pack. This gives customers an incentive to buy the three-pack instead of just one or two, and budtenders don't need to apply a discount. |
Enter the price of the individual pre-rolls, or the per-gram price, in Back Office. Use a discount as needed. |
Selling |
Scan the three-pack's barcode label and tap Charge. Greenbits automatically reports the sale as three units, or the total weight, whichever was the original unit of measure. |
Scan each individual pre-roll separately, or manually enter the total weight of the three-pack and apply a discount as needed. |
Labeling |
Each three-pack requires only one label. | Each three-pack would require three labels, or you'd have to scan one label three times. |
Auditing |
Scan each three-pack into your audit document, or hand-count and enter the total number of three-packs. | Scan each three-pack into your audit document three times, hand-count each three pack and multiply your count by 3, or enter the total weight. |
Adjustments |
Adjust according to the number of three-packs. Greenbits automatically reports the adjustment as three individual units, or the total weight, whichever was the original unit of measure. No mental math or manual entry required! |
Take the number of three-packs you're adjusting and multiply by 3, or adjust according to the total weight. |
