California | Metrc tax types

California operators, learn how to report tax types using Dutchie POS.

In addition to reporting Excise tax, Metrc allows California retailers to report City, County, and Sales taxes to Metrc with sales and deliveries. To help retailers in CA with these new reporting features, Dutchie has added a new Tax Type field on the Tax configuration page in the Backoffice. This field will allow users to select a tax type to report. 

Things to consider

  • You can only select one tax type per record created. 
  • If there is no tax type to report, you must select ‘None’ from the dropdown. 

Configure taxes

  1. Go to Settings > Taxes & Compliance.
  2. Click the rate you want to Edit or click Add rate to configure taxes for a new rate.
  3. Edit and fill out the necessary fields. 
  4. Select a type from the Tax type dropdown.
    Note: You must select Yes or No for excise tax and choose a Tax type
  5. Click Save

Excise Tax

For the State of California Excise tax, choose Yes on the Is excise tax radio button, and choose Excise” from the Tax type dropdown.

City Tax

For any applicable city taxes, choose “City” from the tax type dropdown and then click “Save”

Tax type definitions

  • Excise tax: The California state cannabis excise tax. 
  • City tax: Local business tax imposed by a local jurisdiction.
  • County tax: County tax imposed by a county, when applicable.
  • Sales tax: California sales tax.
