West Virginia | Flower equivalency and patient allotment guide for Dutchie POS

Operators in West Virginia can use this article to learn about flower equivalency and how to determine patient allotments based on Metrc in Dutchie POS.

In West Virginia, Dutchie POS determines patient allotments based on data from Metrc. As such, West Virginia dispensary operators should not configure purchase limits separately in Dutchie POS, as this can lead to redundant or conflicting patient allotments displayed in the register.

Instead, make sure that every cannabis item in your Dutchie POS inventory has an accurate entry for Grams/concentration (for flower) and/or Flower equivalent (for all other cannabis products). This information is necessary for accurate patient allotment calculations and enforcement.

Configure the Grams/concentration and Flower equivalent fields

Dutchie POS allows you to customize which product and inventory fields appear on different pages and modals in the backoffice. Check your field configuration to make sure the Grams/concentration and Flower equivalent fields are available to your inventory managers:

  1. Go to Products > Configure.
  2. Select the Fields tab.
  3. In both the Receive Inventory and Package Detail sections, make sure Grams/Concentration and Flower Equivalent are set to Show (at minimum) or Required if Cannabis (recommended for Flower Equivalent).
  4. Optionally, you can also configure whether these fields are shown or required in the Product Catalog.

Enter Grams/concentration or Flower equivalent

When you receive inventory

As a best practice, be sure to enter these values every time you receive new inventory:

  1. On the Receive Inventory screen, click Add item.

  2. Select the Catalog product that you’re receiving inventory for.
    • For flower products, enter the total cannabis weight (in grams) in the Grams/concentration field. If you’ve made Flower equivalent a required field, enter the same value there.

    • For non-flower products, fill in the Flower equivalent field based on the calculations outlined below. You can enter the product’s total weight per unit in the Grams/concentration field, though this isn’t required for patient allotment purposes.

  3. Click Save package.

After you receive inventory

You can also add or edit these values on inventory you’ve already received:

  1. Go to Products > Inventory.
  2. Select an item from the table.
  3. Scroll down to the Weights section to add or edit Grams per concentration and/or Flower equivalency.

Optional: On Catalog products

Depending on your field configuration, you may also have these fields at the product level (Products > Catalog > Select a product > Details tab). The values you enter in these product-level fields will auto-populate at the inventory level.

Different packages of the same product may have different THC content. The inventory-level value is what is used to verify patient allotments, so it’s important to calculate the flower equivalent for each new package you receive.

How to calculate flower equivalents

Depending on a registered physician's recommendation, patients are allowed up to 6 ounces (or equivalent) of flower per rolling 30-day period. West Virginia regulations define the equivalencies for non-flower products as:

  • 1 ounce of flower = 10 grams of processed THC
  • 1 ounce of flower = 28.35 grams
  • 28.35 grams of flower / 10 grams of processed THC = 1 gram of processed THC is equal to 2.835 grams of flower.

Flower equivalent examples

1g Cartridge

  • If a cartridge’s THC content is 77.55%, then 0.7755g of this 1g cartridge is THC.
  • Total THC for this product = 0.7755g
  • 2.835 x 0.7755 = flower equivalent of 2.1985425g of flower for a 30-day period.

0.5g Cartridge

  • If a cartridge’s THC content is 79.6%.
  • To find THC in grams: 0.5 x .796g = 0.398g
  • Total THC for this product = .398g
  • 2.835 x 0.398 = flower equivalent of 1.12833g of flower for a 30-day period.

Size is 30mL and THC is 17.64%

  • 1mL is equal to 0.785g; therefore 30mL = 23.55g
  • So, 23.55 x 0.1764 = 4.13g
  • Total THC for this product is 4.13g
  • 2.835 x 4.13g = flower equivalent of 11.70855g of flower for a 30-day period.
