Base price, taxed price, and tax breakdown on products and packages in Dutchie POS

This article explains base price, taxed price, and tax breakdowns for products and packages in Dutchie POS.

No matter your pricing strategy, Dutchie POS shows a package or product's Base price (price before taxes), Taxed price, and a Tax breakdown of applicable tax rates on product detail and package detail pages.

When you edit a base price or taxed price, the other prices automatically recalculate based on the applicable flat and/or percentage tax rates for both medical and recreational transactions.

Pricing settings overview

Dutchie POS offers both product-level pricing (prices are set from Products Catalog and all inventory assigned to a product has the same price) and inventory-level pricing (prices are set from Products Inventory and different packages assigned to the same product may have different prices). This is typically configured during implementation and can only be changed by Dutchie Support.

Other price settings, however, are user-configurable. To change any of the following, go to Settings > Location and scroll to the Item Pricing section:

  • Treat Pricing as Tax-Inclusive (Out the Door Price): Because customers in some markets aren’t used to paying sales taxes, and because cannabis taxes are often higher than standard sales taxes, some operators use a tax-inclusive or “out-the-door” pricing model to avoid customer confusion and “sticker shock” at the register. When enabled, the Taxed price is listed first on the product and package detail pages and is displayed as the item price in the Register and online menus. When disabled, the Base price is listed first on the product and package detail pages and is displayed as the item price in the cart, with taxes added separately.
  • Dual Pricing: When enabled, pricing is divided into Recreational and Medical sections, allowing you to set different prices for recreational and medical customers. When disabled, all customers see the same item price, but different tax rates may still apply based on customer type.
  • Med and Rec Share Base Price: This setting only appears when the above settings are both enabled and keeps the base prices for med and rec the same when you change a base price or taxed price.

Notes

  • Regardless of your settings, price fields appear on product detail pages and package detail pages.
    • If your location uses product-level pricing, only edit prices on product detail pages. If your location uses inventory-level pricing, only edit prices on package detail pages.
    • For example, if you use product-level pricing and try to edit a price at the package level (or vice-versa), the change will not be saved and won't affect pricing.
  • If you have set up different tax rates for different customer types and are not using dual pricing, the Taxed price will only reflect the tax rate(s) applicable to your default customer type (set in SettingsLocation > Defaults).
  • Cost-based and potency-based taxes are not reflected in the Taxed price.
  • A product's final price may vary in the cart due to discounts, loyalty redemptions, tier pricing, tax exemptions based on customer type, etc.
  • Packages without an assigned tax category automatically inherit the tax category assigned to the associated Catalog product, and tax categories will be reflected in the tax breakdown.
