Customize product categories to classify inventory.
In Dutchie POS, product categories are customizable. That way you have full control of how to classify and break down your inventory. The categories you configure will impact all areas of the system including:
- Discounts based on product category
- Purchase limits
- Taxes and tax categories
- Online menu management
- Default units of measure for lab results
- Reporting
Create or edit product categories
If you make changes to an existing product category, and products in that category are currently in customer carts, you may need to remove and re-add the products for the changes to be reflected in the Register. Whenever possible, we recommend making changes to existing product categories outside of business hours.
- In the Backoffice, go to Products > Configure.
- Select the Categories tab.
- Click Add category or select an existing category.
-
Fill in the fields as needed. Depending on your market and configuration, you may not have all of these fields.
Field Description Category name and master category Category name is the only required field and can be anything you want it to be, but typically this should be a specific type of product. For example: Badder
Optionally, add a more general overarching category in the Master category field. For example, Concentrates.
Purchase limit category Select the applicable purchase limit type for products in this category.
Note that the names of purchase limit categories in Dutchie POS may vary from what your state calls them, as these serve all states that Dutchie operates in. For example, the "Combined Inhalable" category in Dutchie POS corresponds to what some states call "Cartridges."
Available for Select which customer types can purchase items in this product category. By default, all customer types enabled for your location are selected. At least one customer type must be selected.
Notes:
- Individual products also have an Available for setting, which overrides the category-level settings (i.e., a product can have a different setting than its category).
- If you change the Available for at the category level, the same changes will applied to all associated products, and a confirmation message will appear before saving changes.
- If you change a product’s category assignment, the product will inherit its new category’s Available for settings, even if it previously had its own settings.
- To maintain product-specific Available for settings after changing a product’s category assignment or the category-level settings, you will need to manually change the Available for settings at the product level.
Regulatory category This is an additional compliance category that only appears in certain states. Tax categories What category/categories do these products fall under for tax purposes? For example, is it cannabis or non-cannabis? You can configure your own tax categories under Settings > Taxes & compliance. Global category and Global subcategory For locations integrated with Dutchie E-Commerce only.
Product categories in Dutchie POS are fully customizable. In Dutchie E-Commerce, products must be assigned to standardized categories. Use these dropdowns to map this product category and all associated products to the corresponding category option(s) in Dutchie E-Commerce. Products from unmapped categories will not appear on your online menu.
You can override this category-level mapping for individual products by going to Products > Catalog, select a product, then select the Online details tab and choose a Global category and Global subcategory for that specific product.
Flower equivalent Optionally, enter a flower equivalent value that should apply to all products in this category, then select Apply to this location or Apply to all locations if you have more than one location in your LSP. This option is only available to admin users.
You can alternatively manage flower equivalencies for each individual product. Learn more about flower equivalencies.
Label assignments This only appears if the "default product labels" feature is enabled for your location. Contact Dutchie Support to have this feature enabled or disabled.
For each customer type, select the default label template for products in this category and whether those labels should auto-print.
When you’re finished, Save the new product category. You can now:
- Assign products in your Catalog to the category
- Use the category in discount criteria, such as a discount that only applies to the category or excludes the category.
- Use the category in tax and purchase limit criteria
- Conduct audits by category
- Filter by category in the inventory list and Register
- Map your Dutchie POS categories to the corresponding categories in Dutchie E-Commerce.
Delete a product category
- In the Backoffice, go to Products > Configure.
- Select the Categories tab.
- Click the ellpsis (...) next to the category you want to delete.
- If there are products assigned to the category, select a new category to reassign those products to. All products must be assigned to a category for tax application and purchase limit enforcement.
- Click Delete.
