Learn how to prepare for and support event sales in different tax jurisdictions.
Dutchie POS can support off-site sales at conventions and other events in much the same way as you conduct sales at your dispensary. However, if an event takes place at a location where different taxes apply, such as another city or county that levies its own cannabis or general sales tax, there are steps you will need to take to prepare to sell cannabis products in a different tax jurisdiction.

Verify current tax categories for products
Later in this process, you will need to create event-specific tax categories, tax rates, and products. But first, we recommend verifying the setup of your current products and tax categories to make sure the event-specific products and tax categories you’ll create later won’t affect your home location's operations.
For instance, if your location has a "Cannabis Tax", a "State Tax", and a "City Tax", make sure that your cannabis products have all three tax categories selected and your non-cannabis items only have general city and state sales taxes applied.
- Go to Products > Catalog.
- Use the Category filter to select all cannabis categories. Note that if different categories of cannabis products are taxed differently at your location, select categories based on applicable taxes.
- Next, check the box in the header and then Select all. A Bulk actions button will appear.
- From Bulk actions, select Bulk edit product details.
- Set the Field to Tax categories, then select the applicable tax categories.
- Click Save.
- Use the Category filter to select all non-cannabis categories and repeat these steps, assigning the applicable tax categories for non-cannabis items.
Edit tax rates and tax categories
Check your tax rates and make sure none of your existing tax rates Apply to all categories and instead only apply to the existing relevant tax categories so you can create separate event-specific tax categories in the next steps.
Next, create new tax categories that will only apply to items sold at the event. For example, if the cannabis tax rate is different at the event location, create a new "Cannabis Tax - [event name or location]" category. You may also want to similarly rename your existing “home” tax categories to avoid any confusion.
Tip: If you plan to or may sell cannabis at different events and locations in the future, consider developing a consistent, specific naming convention for your different event-based tax rates, categories, and products.
With separate tax categories configured for your dispensary location and event location, you now create new tax rates for the event location, assigning them to the event- or location-specific tax categories.
Create an event-specific inventory room
It’s optional but recommended that you create a new inventory room that will hold only the inventory you’re taking to the event. Check the following Room type boxes:
- Sales floor
- Inventory room
Make sure the E-Commerce room box is not checked.
If you have designed registers for the event, select them from the Linked registers dropdown, then go to Settings Devices and make sure Linked rooms inventory only is set to Yes for each event register.
Create event-specific catalog products
Now that your taxes are set up to support events, create new versions of the catalog products that you will sell at the event, and be sure to assign them to the event-specific tax categories you created earlier.
- From Products > Catalog, select a product that you’ll be selling at the event.
- On the product detail page, select Actions Copy.
- Rename the copy according to the event or location.
- Generate a new SKU for the event-specific product.
- Assign the event-specific tax categories.
- Click the Online details tab and either make sure Available online is disabled or that the Online title is empty or matches the original product.
- Click Save.
- Repeat for each product that you will sell at the event.
Convert inventory
Lastly, perform conversions on the inventory packages that you will be taking to the event according to the quantities you’ll be taking with you. This conversion happens the same as any other product conversion.
For example, if you have 100 pre-rolls in stock with package ID 1234, and you want to take 50 of these to the event, convert 50 units to the event-specific product you created and assign it a new package ID of 1235, etc.
Print new labels with the updated package ID to properly scan the items at the event register.
