How do I set up a manager discount or manager override?

This article shows how to set up discounts that require a manager PIN to apply. These are sometimes called manager discounts or manager overrides because they allow manager to override the price of an item with an open-amount or open-percentage discount.

Issue

Our store would like to create a manual discount that can be applied at the register by a manager without setting up a discount for a specific amount.

Steps to solve

With the following settings, managers can manually discount items at the register, by applying a percentage or dollar amount on a case-by-case basis. Non-managers will not be able to do this.

Required permissions

Manager discounts require the PIN of a user who has the POS Manager user permission. Find this permission in Settings > Users > select a user or permission group > Administration.

Set up manual manager discount

  1. Go to Marketing > Discounts.
  2. Click the Create discount button.
  3. For Application method, select Manual.
  4. On the Details step, set Require manager approval to Yes.
  5. If you want your manager discount to be applicable only to certain products, you can set those conditions on the Requirements step, but nothing is required here.
  6. On the Rewards step, there is no need to make selections for How it will be applied. Managers will be able to select any discount method, enter a custom amount or percentage, and choose how to apply it in the Register. See Apply discounts in Dutchie POS for more information.
  7. Choose whether to Allow stacking. Typically, you'll want manager discounts to allow stacking so they can be combined with other discounts.
  8. Ignore net taxes should be set to No for most discounts, including manager discounts.
  9. Because this is a manual discount, it will not appear online and the online details step is greyed out.
  10. Review the Summary and then click Create discount/Update discount.

Apply a manager discount

Follow the steps in Apply discounts in Dutchie POS. When you select a manual discount configured with Require manager approval set to Yes, the register will prompt for a manager PIN before applying it.
