Dutchie SMS/MMS Campaigns: A Guide to 10DLC onboarding and regulations

This article will help Loyalty and Marketing customers understand 10DLC onboarding and regulations.

To use SMS messaging, the Loyalty & Marketing module must be set up first. This module manages customer segmentation, opt-in preferences, and campaign execution. Because of this, SMS can’t be activated or used until the Loyalty & Marketing module is fully configured and running.

To be able to send text messages with Dutchie SMS Campaigns, you will need to complete the 10 digit long code (10DLC) registration process. 10DLC is the process of verifying and registering a business's 10DLC phone number with The Campaign Registry (TCR). This registration is required to ensure compliance with carrier regulations and reduce spam for businesses that use 10DLC numbers for texting campaigns.

What is 10DLC?

10DLC refers to standard 10-digit local phone numbers used for business texting. It's a way for businesses to send SMS and MMS messages to customers while maintaining a local, recognizable number.

Why is 10DLC registration needed?

Completing 10DLC registration helps with deliverability, reduces spam, ensures compliance, and saves costs. Registration is needed to verify businesses and their messaging campaigns, helping filter out fraudulent or spam messages. Carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile require 10DLC registration for A2P messaging to enforce their messaging policies.

What is The Campaign Registry (TCR)?

TCR is a third-party organization that acts as a central database for 10DLC registration. They verify business information and campaign details to ensure compliance with carrier regulations.

What is required for registration?

Registration requirements include:

  • Texting Name - This is the name that appears in the initial text message to customers.
    • This name cannot include any cannabis related language. Ex - if your business is called “ABC Cannabis” or “XYZ Dispensary” the name needs to be changed.
  • Legal company name - Name your company is legally registered under.
  • Doing business as (DBA) - Name your company is doing business as.
  • EIN or Business number - Employer identification number registered with the IRS.
  • Email - Email contact for your business.
  • Website URL - Business website.
  • Logo / Image to send in MMS messages
    • Like the Texting Name, the image cannot include any cannabis-related imagery (pot leaves, joints, smoke, etc.)
  • General contact information - Street address, City, State, Zip, and Phone number. Your street address may be a different address than your retail location.

To submit registration with a W-9 Form, provide the form to your implementation strategist. If a W-9 Form is not available, you can complete our online form instead.

Who needs to register?

Any business that sends SMS or MMS messages to US phone numbers using 10DLC numbers needs to register. If you are operating in different states/markets, you need to fill out a separate form for each market.
