Waterfall campaigns: prioritize channels and reduce messaging costs

Dutchie waterfall campaigns prioritize communication channels, such as email, push, and SMS, ensuring the system only uses secondary channels for consumers who didn't receive the message on the higher-priority channel.

Waterfall campaigns help reduce costs and redundant messaging by limiting the use of lower-priority channels to only those consumers for whom a higher-priority channel failed.

Delivery failure and channel prioritization

The channel prioritization logic is based on whether delivery failed for a particular consumer and channel. Email delivery may fail because the consumer's inbox was full, their email server was down, the message was too large for the server, or because the email address was invalid. SMS may fail due to an invalid phone number. SMS and push notifications also fail if the consumer opted not to receive SMS or push notifications from your organization.

An example prioritization:

  • First, email all targeted consumers.
  • Second, send a push notification only to consumers for whom email delivery failed.
  • Finally, send an SMS only to consumers for whom the email and push notification delivery failed.

Create a waterfall campaign

Follow these steps to set up a new waterfall campaign:

  1. When creating a campaign, select one or more channels in the first step of the campaign creation process.
  2. If you select more than one channel, the Send as waterfall campaign toggle appears.
  3. Toggle the Send as waterfall campaign option on.
  4. Drag and drop the selected channels to arrange them into your desired priority order.
  5. Complete the remaining steps of the campaign creation process and save the campaign.

View waterfall campaign details

After you save a waterfall campaign:

  • The Content tab will display a note indicating that it is a waterfall campaign.
  • The channels will be listed in their specified priority order, with the detailed content information for each channel displayed below.
