Dutchie POS supports different models for displaying taxes and medical vs. recreational pricing.
- Pre-tax: prices in the Register and online menus include no taxes, which are added at checkout.
- “Out-the-door” (OTD): prices in the Register and online menus include all applicable taxes, tax amounts are still broken out on receipts.
- Either of the above can be combined with dual pricing, which allows you to set different prices for medical and recreational sales.
Do not change these settings on your own. Contact Dutchie Support or your CSM for assistance first. Changing these settings without assistance from the Dutchie team will alter the current base price and taxed price of all of your products, and changing dual pricing settings can affect e-commerce menus. Therefore, it’s important to coordinate this change with our team so we can perform a bulk update to maintain your current prices and/or re-sync your menu.
What happens when enabling or disabling out-the-door pricing
If you have pre-tax pricing and enable out the door the pricing without coordinating a bulk pricing update with our team, every product’s base (pre-tax) price will become the taxed price. For example, if a product is $10.00 before tax and the total applicable tax is 20%:
| Before enabling out-the-door pricing | After enabling out-the-door pricing | |
| Base price | $10.00 | $8.33 |
| Taxed price | $12.00 | $10.00 |
Conversely, if you already have out-the-door pricing and disable it, the inverse happens, and every product’s taxed price becomes its base price.
| Before disabling out-the-door pricing | After disabling out-the-door pricing | |
| Base price | $10.00 | $12.00 |
| Taxed price | $12.00 | $14.40 |
Item pricing settings
The settings that you should avoid changing without assistance from the Dutchie team are found in Settings > Location > Item Pricing:
Treat Pricing as Tax-Inclusive (Out the Door Price): When enabled, the taxed price is listed first on product and package detail pages and is displayed as the item price in the Register and online menus. When disabled, the Base price is listed first on product and package detail pages and is displayed as the item price and taxes are added in the cart.
Dual Pricing: When enabled, pricing is divided into Recreational and Medical sections, allowing you to set different prices for recreational and medical customers. When disabled, all customers see the same item price, but different tax rates may still apply based on customer type.
Med and Rec Share Base Price: This setting only appears when the above settings are both enabled, and keeps the base prices for med and rec the same when you change a base price or taxed price.
Best Practices
- Schedule updates during low traffic hours. Minimize disruptions by making changes during non-peak times.
- Communicate internally. Inform your team of any pricing changes to ensure consistency at checkout.
- Test before rollout. Run a few test transactions to verify the new pricing setup before applying it to all transactions.
- Document your configuration. Document current settings or take screenshots before making changes to ensure you can revert if needed.
- Check the online settings of your tax rates. Each tax rate configured in Dutchie POS has an online settings section that controls how taxes are shown on Dutchie E-Commerce. Learn more about online tax settings.
