This article explains how to initiate a loyalty referral program for your consumers and how they can sign up and share the referral links and rewards with others.
This feature is sometimes called Refer-a-friend or Loyalty referrals. It makes it possible for you to build and manage loyalty referral programs for your consumers.
Things to know
- You must be a Dutchie Loyalty & Marketing subscriber to use this feature
- Consumers must create a new account or sign in to an existing account to participate in the referral program.
- Existing loyalty members cannot reuse a referral link to claim additional rewards.
How to set up a referral program for your locations
Note: If you have nationwide loyalty enabled, you’ll only need to configure the referral program rules once for all LSPs.
From Dutchie POS admin, go to Marketing > Loyalty > Referrals
- Click Get Started to begin setting up your referral program.
- If you do not have Marketing and Loyalty enabled, this will not be available to you. Contact Dutchie when you are ready to sign up.
- If you do have Marketing and Loyalty enabled, you will only see this modal the first time you set up your referral program. Once you've set up your program, you'll see the referrals dashboard.
- Fill in the referral settings, and click Next.
When you set up your referral program, you’ll see that several types of people are involved in the workflow.
- The Referrer: An existing customer who shares a unique link or QR code with their network.
- The Friend: A new customer who signs up using that link and makes a qualifying purchase.
Referral program settings
- Referral program name - This is what you will call your referral program.
- Referrer reward - How many points will the referrer receive when their friend signs up for the referral program?
- Friend reward - How many points will the friend receive when they sign up for the referral program?
- Point expiration - When do the points expire?
- Minimum spend - How much does the friend need to spend to receive the points?
- Learn more link - A field to add a link to additional information about your loyalty program
- Review the campaign settings, and click Launch program to make the referral program live.
Note: Each referral success campaign needs to be configured per LSP. When you click Launch program, a modal will appear to remind you of this. You will need to click Confirm to finish setting up your referral program.
Create a referral success campaign
Click the Open Editor button next to your referral program in the Campaign Performance section of the Referrals dashboard to go to the Campaigns screen.
Alternatively, you can reach this screen from Dutchie POS admin by going to Marketing > Loyalty > Campaigns > Create a Campaign, and clicking Automated Campaigns from the dropdown menu.
From here, you can access a variety of automated campaigns, including the Referral Success campaign. When you click this tile, you will be able to create a template and build content for your campaign.
When you create your Referral Success Campaign, you will set up communications (email, SMS, and/or push) that will be sent to referrers when a referred friend meets the qualifying purchase limit.
For more detailed information and instructions about setting up your campaign, see: Create campaigns and view analytics with Dutchie POS Loyalty & Marketing Pro.
Analytics, dashboards, and fraud prevention
Once you set up a referral program at your location, the referral dashboard will appear when you click the Referral tab in the Loyalty section of Dutchie POS.
From here, you can monitor referral activity for specific time frames and export the reports.
See top referrers and prevent abuse
You can also see top referrers and drill down to learn more about how they are using the program. This will help you ensure that customers are not sending excessive referrals to themselves.
Note: A field has been added to the customer profile so marketers can control exactly who has access to the referral program.
Edit referral program or campaign
You can edit the referral program settings from this screen by clicking settings and picking edit from the drop-down menu.
You can also edit the entire campaign by clicking the Open Editor button under campaign performance.
Mobile experience
Referral programs are also available in Mobile. Consumers can generate their referral links and QR codes directly from their mobile device.

Referrer: How to share a referral link and receive referral rewards
Existing loyalty customers can find and share their own unique referral link from their account profile.
- On Dutchie E-Commerce web or mobile app, navigate to My account.
- From the Referrals tab, copy the personal referral URL or view a QR code and share with friends and family.
- When a referred friend or family member signs up using the referral link or by scanning the QR code, and meets the qualifying purchase amount, the referrer will receive a referral success communication.
Friend: How to sign up for an account using a referral link and get your own referral link
Once users share a referral URL or QR code with a friend, the friend will follow the URL or QR code they received. This will bring them to a Dutchie Account Sign-up form where they can sign up via their Gmail or Apple accounts or with an email address.
To complete the referral process:
- Open the link or scan the QR code from the referrer.
- Review the loyalty perk information displayed on the signup page.
- Create a new user account.
-
On the Connect account prompt, select Connect now.
- Note: If users select Not right now or cancel the connection, they will not receive referral rewards until the account is connected.
- Select Agree and continue to accept the terms.
- Navigate to My Account
- Go to Loyalty
- Copy the personal referral URL or view a QR code and share with friends and family.
Troubleshooting
-
Error message on signup: When users cancel the connection process or decline the loyalty terms, the system displays an error or prompts them to reconnect.
Users must agree to the terms to complete the referral workflow.
- Link not working: If a person is already a loyalty member and attempts to use a referral link, the system will not apply the referral to their account; the program is intended for new enrollments.
