Pay by Bank: Let Customers Pay After They Order

Generally Available

How customers can link Pay by Bank after placing an order — and what changes for you at the POS

This article covers the Link to Pay feature for Pay by Bank. When a customer places an online order without selecting Pay by Bank, they will receive Pay by Bank payment links at multiple points after checkout — giving them the opportunity to switch to Pay by Bank before their order is finalized.

Requirement for Email & SMS Link to Pay: Your store must have Ecomm Order Status Emails & SMS enabled in Ecomm Admin for Pay by Bank payment links to appear in customer emails and texts. If this is not enabled, customers will not receive Link to Pay prompts via email or SMS.

What's Changing

Today, customers who choose Pay by Bank at checkout get a seamless, pre-paid experience at pickup or delivery. But customers who select a different payment method at checkout never get a chance to switch — even though many would prefer to pay ahead if they were reminded.

With Link to Pay, customers who place an online order without selecting Pay by Bank will now receive Pay by Bank payment links at multiple points after checkout — using the same emails, texts, and confirmation screens they already receive today.

Where Customers Receive Pay by Bank Payment Links

Pay by Bank payment links are delivered through the same touchpoints customers already receive for every order — no new communications are being introduced. A Pay by Bank payment button is added to:

  • Order confirmation screen (web and app) immediately after checkout
  • Order placed confirmation email
  • Order confirmed / being prepared email
  • Order status text message updates — SMS notifies the customer that they can pay with Pay by Bank and directs them to check their email, where the Pay by Bank payment button and link are available. The SMS itself does not contain a direct payment link.
  • Mobile app lock screen & notifications — customers using the Dutchie mobile app will see a Pay Now button on their iPhone lock screen (iOS Live Activity widget / Dynamic Island) or Android notification shade while their order is active and unpaid. Tapping it opens the app directly to the Pay by Bank payment screen — no need to search for the order. The button disappears once the order has been paid.

What Happens at the POS

If a customer uses a Pay by Bank payment link and completes payment before their order is finalized, the order will automatically update in the POS to reflect Pay by Bank as the payment method — no manual action is required from you to make this switch.

Once a customer pays this way, the order behaves exactly like any other Pay by Bank order that was selected at checkout from the start. You'll finalize it the same way you already do today — there's no new or different workflow to learn.

What This Means for You

  • You may start seeing orders arrive as Pay by Bank that weren't originally placed that way — this is expected and means the customer used a Pay by Bank payment link after checkout.
  • No new training is required for finalizing these orders — follow your existing Pay by Bank checkout process.
  • If a customer asks about the Pay by Bank link they received in their email, you can let them know it's a safe and optional way to pre-pay before their order is ready.
  • If a customer asks why they received a text about Pay by Bank but couldn't find a payment link in it, let them know the link is in their email — the text message is a notification to check there.
  • If you have questions about whether this feature is active at your store, check with your store manager or regional contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything differently when this order arrives?

No. Once a customer pays using a Pay by Bank payment link, the order updates automatically and is treated exactly like a standard Pay by Bank order. You'll finalize it the same way.

Does my store need anything enabled for this to work?

For Pay by Bank payment links to appear in customer emails and texts, your store must have Ecomm Order Status Emails & SMS enabled in Ecomm Admin. The order confirmation screen (web and app) does not require this setting. See How to enable Order Status Notifications for setup instructions.

What if the customer changes their mind after starting the Pay by Bank flow?

If the customer does not complete the Pay by Bank payment, their original payment method at checkout remains in effect and no changes are made to the order.

Will customers get extra texts or emails because of this?

No new communications are being added. The Pay by Bank payment link is included in the same emails and texts customers already receive for every order.

A customer said they got a text about Pay by Bank but there was no link — is that a bug?

No, this is expected. SMS messages cannot include a direct Pay by Bank payment link, so the text notifies the customer and directs them to check their email, where the Pay by Bank button is available.
