Learn how to view, connect, and troubleshoot printers using the Dutchie Devices tab, including fallback options and network printer setup.
Overview
The Dutchie Devices tab gives you a single place to view every printer connected to your location, regardless of how it is connected.
A single physical printer can appear more than once in the tab if it is set up through multiple services, such as the Dutchie Devices app, WebUSB, and PrintNode. This is expected behavior and does not mean you have duplicate hardware. Turning on Dutchie Devices does not interrupt existing WebUSB or PrintNode connections, so you can run all three services at the same time.
The Dutchie Devices app is supported for both Mac and Windows.
The required user permissions for this feature are:
- Edit Register
- View Registers
- Configure Printers
Connect a network printer in the Dutchie Devices app
- Confirm the printer is connected to the network. The Dutchie Devices app supports both USB-connected printers and printers connected directly to the network (for example, through an Ethernet cable from the router to the printer).
- Open the Dutchie Devices app and check the printer list. You should see the same printers that appear in the computer's local printer list. A network-connected printer will display with a Network label, for example, MCPrint3 (Network). If a printer doesn't appear in the list, you may need to install it on your computer first and/or install or update printer drivers from the manufacturer's website, then restart.
- Verify the network printer appears in the Local Printers tab. The printer will appear here as long as the computer recognizes it, regardless of whether it is connected by USB or network.
- Once the printer appears in Local Printers, sync it. After syncing, it will appear in Dutchie Devices, where you can connect it directly to the Dutchie Backoffice.
Connect a USB printer in the Dutchie Devices app
- Open the Actions dropdown and select Download Dutchie Devices (Mac OS) or Download Dutchie Devices (Windows). Once the download finishes, open the file, install, and launch the Dutchie Devices app.
- Open the Local Printers tab in the Dutchie Devices app. This tab should show the same printers connected directly to your computer that appear in System Settings > Printers & Scanners. Verify that your USB-connected printer is listed. If a printer doesn't appear in the list, you may need to install it on your computer first and/or install or update printer drivers from the manufacturer's website, then restart.
- In the Backoffice, go to the Dutchie Devices tab and Actions > Authenticate Dutchie Print. The app will recognize available printers and prompt you to choose which ones to connect. Select the printer you want to use (for example, MCPrint3), confirm the printer type or language if prompted (for example, a receipt printer using Star print language), and optionally run a test print to confirm the printer responds.
- Click Finish and Sync and wait for the app to confirm the printer is ready. Go back to Dutchie Devices and refresh to confirm the newly connected printer appears in the list. Rename the printer if needed (for example, Register 1) and click Save.
- Go to the Register tab and assign the newly connected printer as the default printer for the register. Refresh if needed so the printer appears. Log into the register, open the receipt printer settings, and confirm the printer is connected. Run a test print if desired, then complete a test transaction and print the receipt to verify everything works end to end.
Understand the Dutchie Devices app tabs
- Local Printers: printers connected directly to the computer you are using.
- Location Printers: all printers associated with the location in Dutchie.
- Jobs: a historical log of print jobs.
- Settings: options to check for updates, launch the app automatically at login, and rerun the setup wizard.
The Location ID should populate automatically during authentication. If it does not, go to the Dutchie Devices tab in the Backoffice and select Actions > Copy location ID, then paste it into the app.
View all printer implementations in the Dutchie Devices tab
Settings > Devices > Dutchie Devices shows every printer connected to your location, no matter which service is used to connect it.
If you don't see this tab, go to Settings > Location, scroll to Integrations, check the box for Use Print Service, and click Save.
Use multiple printer integrations as a backup
You can keep the same printer configured in the Dutchie Devices app, WebUSB, and PrintNode simultaneously. This creates a fallback setup so that if one service has an issue, you can switch to another quickly without making any setup changes to recover.
To switch implementations from the register:
- Go to Settings > Hardware > Receipt printer in the Dutchie Register.
- Switch the printer to another implementation, such as WebUSB (Local USB printer) or PrintNode.
This gives you a manual failover path without needing to reconfigure the printer.
Manage jobs and layout settings
The Actions dropdown in the Dutchie Devices tab includes View print jobs, which shows all jobs sent from that location and centralizes job visibility across PrintNode, WebUSB, and Dutchie Devices. You can open a job to see a receipt preview along with sent, processed, and completed timestamps.
The Dutchie Devices tab also includes Receipt layout settings for printers configured through the Dutchie Devices app. You can customize:
- Characters per line
- Left margin
- Right margin
- Extra spacing
- Upside-down printing
