This article shows you how to apply, modify, and remove discounts in the Register. Discounts are configured in the Backoffice and may apply automatically to products or combinations of products that meet certain criteria, or they may be applied manually or by entering a code.
Things to consider
- Before you can apply discounts at the point of sale, you need to create discounts in the Backoffice.
- Discounts are shared across all your locations, though you can configure individual discounts to be available only at specific locations.
- Some discounts are configured as loyalty rewards that customers can redeem in exchange for points. These discounts are set up and redeemed differently from standard discounts. See Set up a loyalty program in Dutchie POS and Apply loyalty points for more information.

Apply manual discounts
You can apply manual discounts to one or more items in a cart.
To apply a manual discount:
- Add an item to a cart.
- Click the ellipsis (...) next to the item’s price and choose Apply discount.
-
Click on a discount from the list of Available Discounts.
If the discount you’re looking for isn’t shown, check the discount’s configuration in the Backoffice. The discount may not be applicable to the item(s) you’ve added, available at the current day or time, or may require loyalty points that the customer doesn’t have.
-
The discount’s default settings are shown under Selected Discount, but you can make changes before applying the discount:

For amount-off discounts:
- Just One Item - Take $1 off one unit of the selected product. At the line-item level, this $1 off will be shown as $0.50 off for a quantity of 2, $0.33 off for a quantity of 3, etc.
- Each Item in Row - Take $1 off each unit of the selected product.
- Distributed Among Every Item - Take $1 off the cart subtotal and allocate the discount proportionally.
- Every Item in Cart - Take $1 off every item in the cart.
For percentage-off discounts:
- Just one item means that if the cart contains more than one unit of the same product, the discount applies only to the first unit. So, if the discount is 10% and there are four of the same qualifying product, the register will show a 2.5% discount for the line item (equivalent to 10% off one unit).
- Each item in row means the 10% discount applies to each unit of every qualifying product. This is typically the how users intend their percentage discounts to apply.
- Apply to subtotal means the percentage is calculated against the subtotal of all qualifying items, and then the resulting discount amount is distributed proportionally across the qualifying line items. For a percentage discount, the end result is mathematically the same as "Each item in row" — the distinction matters more for dollar-amount discounts or when applying a manual percent-off discount at the cart level as opposed to line-item level.

Notes

This appears on customer receipts and certain reports including the Discount Detail Report. Entries in this field are limited to 100 characters. - If required, enter a Manager PIN.
- Click Apply Discount.
- Click the X in the upper left to return to the cart.
Troubleshooting: Manual discounts appear in the picker regardless of customer type restrictions
This is expected behavior. You will see all of the manual discounts in the picker regardless of customer types. The discount will only apply if all of its conditions are met.
Apply discounts by entering a code
Code-based discounts apply to every qualifying item in the cart.
To enter a discount code:
- Add items to a cart.
- Click the ellipsis (...) button in cart header and choose Discounts.
- Click the Enter discount code field and type or scan the discount code.
- Click Apply. The discount and applicable products are noted in the Cart and under Manage Discounts.
Customers can also enter their own codes during checkout in Dutchie E-Commerce. Customer-entered codes will be automatically reflected when you open their cart in Dutchie POS.
Automatic discounts
Some discounts are set up to automatically apply when you add a qualifying item or combination of items to a cart. These discounts appear under each discounted item, just like manual and by-code discounts.
You can review all applied discounts by clicking the Discounts button.
Remove discounts
To remove a discount, click the trash icon next to the discount in either the Cart or Manage Discounts section.
