Connect a scale to your Dutchie POS Register

Learn how to connect an A&D scale to the Dutchie Register.

The images in this article show a Dutchie Register Terminal (Elo device) and an A&D FX-series scale. Your hardware may vary, but will use similar connections.

This setup requires a browser that supports WebSerial, such as Chrome or Edge.

Configure your scale to work with your register device

Before connecting your scale, make sure it is in the correct configuration for your register device:

Connect the scale to your Register

To connect a scale to a Register, you'll need at least two things: a serial cable and a USB-to-serial adapter. Think of the serial cable as the bridge between the scale and the adapter, and the adapter as the translator that lets your computer understand the scale's data.

Not just any serial cable will work. The serial cable needs to be wired in a very specific way, so stick to the approved models listed below.

Serial cables

Recommended: C2G 52148 – 6ft Serial RS232 DB9 Cable F/F

Approved alternatives:

  • C2G 52147 – 3ft Serial RS232 DB9 F/F (In-Wall CMG)
  • C2G 52149 – 10ft Serial RS232 DB9 F/F (In-Wall CMG)
  • C2G 52150 – 12ft Serial RS232 DB9 F/F (In-Wall CMG)

USB-to-serial adapters

Recommended: C2G 26886 – 1.5ft USB to DB9 Serial RS232 Adapter

Approved alternative: TrippLite U209-000-R – USB-A to RS232 (DB9) Serial Adapter Cable, 5ft

Cable extension options

Need more reach? You have two options:

Option 1 — Link two serial cables together using one of the couplers below and a USB-to-serial adapter:

  • C2G 02781 – DB9 F/F Serial RS232 Mini Gender Changer (Coupler)
  • Axiom DB9FFC-AX – DB9 F/F Mini Gender Changer

Option 2 — Extend the USB side using one of the USB extension cables below, connects the register to the USB-to-serial adapter:

If you're using an A&D Scale and WebSerial-compatible browser, select Add new scale and follow the on-screen instructions to connect and authorize your scale.

  5. Once authorized, you can select A&D Scale from the dropdown.
  6. Place an item on the scale and press the PRINT button on the scale. Confirm that the weight reading from the scale appears in the Test weight reading field on the register.

The Dutchie Register web application is configured by default to work with the factory settings for A&D scales: 2400 bps, 7 bits, even parity.

The Dutchie Register Terminal (Elo device) requires 9600 bps, 8 bits, non-parity.

  7. If you’re using a Dutchie Register Terminal (Elo device) or a different scale configuration, click Advanced Settings to select the settings that match your scale’s settings. If you have an A&D FX-series scale not connected via 232Key, you can click Auto-configure scale to detect your scale’s current settings and configure the Register settings match.

  8. Click Save settings and then Return to settings.

Optional and recommended Backoffice settings

Restrict to scale weighing

The Restrict to scale weighing setting is recommended because it prevents users from altering or entering a weight other than the scale reading. Note that this setting is register-specific and does not interfere with the weight override (or "weigh heavy") function.

  1. In the Dutchie Backoffice, go to Settings > Devices > Registers
  2. Select a register.
  3. Scroll down to Restrict to scale weighing and select Yes.

  4. Click Save.

Weight override ("weigh heavy")

Weight override is an optional feature that allows users to price bulk flower based on common weights (1g, 2g, 3.5g, etc.) even when the actual weight is slightly different (also known as "weigh heavy"). If weight override is not enabled, bulk flower is priced based on the actual weight. Contact Dutchie Support to have weight override enabled for your location.

When weight override is enabled, it's important to also set a Dispense weight vs actual weight threshold. This enforces a maximum difference between the actual weight and the weight override to prevent users from weighing excessive amounts or charging an artificially low price.

  1. Go to Settings > Location.
  2. Scroll down to the Defaults section.
  3. In the Dispense weight vs actual weight threshold field, enter an amount greater than 0 and select a unit of measure.

  4. Optionally, turn on Auto Adjust Weight Override. When enabled, if the weight of the product falls within the dispense weight vs. actual weight threshold, the item's price will be automatically adjusted accordingly.
  5. Click Save.

This threshold is not inclusive. For example, if you set the threshold to 0.2g, budtenders can enter an override that is less than 0.2g different from the actual weight, but not 0.2g or more.
