Dutchie offers an integrated gift card solution in partnership with Birchmount. This allows dispensaries to sell, activate, and redeem gift cards directly through the Dutchie POS — no manual portal switching required for redemptions.
Things to Consider
- In-store only. Integrated Birchmount gift cards can only be redeemed at the register. They cannot be used for online checkout through Dutchie E-Commerce.
- Birchmount account required. Contact Birchmount at support@birchmountnetwork.com to set up an account and order physical cards. Birchmount handles all card shipping and restocking.
- Feature flag required. The Birchmount integration must be enabled by Dutchie before you can use it. Contact Dutchie Support to request activation.
Set Up Gift Card Inventory
Gift cards must be added to your product catalog as non-cannabis inventory before they can be sold.
- Go to Products > Catalog and add a new product.
- On the Product Details tab, configure the following:
- Cannabis Product: No
- Strain: Non-Cannabis
- Taxable: No
- Price: Set to the denomination of the gift card you want to sell (e.g. $25, $50, $100)
- Complete the inventory setup so the gift card appears as a SKU on your POS.

Enable the Birchmount Integration
- In Dutchie Back Office, go to Settings > Integrations > Birchmount > Settings.
- Toggle Enabled to On.
- Enter the Loc ID & API Key and click Save. - provided to you by Birchmount
- Refresh your POS so the updated settings take effect. The Gift Card payment option will now appear on your register at checkout.
Note: If you previously had a non-integrated gift card button enabled, you may now see two gift card buttons at checkout. To remove the old one, go to Settings > Location and deselect Checkout Gift Card.

Activate a Gift Card
After a gift card is sold, activation is completed through the Birchmount portal.
- Add the fixed-value gift card product to the cart.
- Click Checkout, select a payment type, and complete the sale.
- Open the Birchmount portal and scan the card barcode or manually enter the 19-digit card number and gift card amount to activate it.
Redeem a Gift Card at the Register
With Birchmount Integration (Recommended)
The integrated flow lets you redeem a gift card directly from the POS — no portal switching needed.
- Add items to the cart and select Checkout.
- On the Select Payment Type screen, select Gift Card.
- Scan the card barcode or manually enter the card number and PIN.
- The available balance will display automatically.
- Edit the amount if the customer wants to apply a partial balance, or leave it as-is to apply the full available amount.
- Select Apply Gift Card.
- If the gift card covers the full order total, select Pay to complete the transaction. If a balance remains, select another payment method for the remainder.

Without Birchmount Integration (Manual)
Use this flow if the integration has not been enabled at your location.
- Open the Birchmount portal and look up the card balance by scanning the barcode or entering the 19-digit card number.
- Confirm the available balance, then go to Checkout on the POS and select Gift Card.
- Manually enter the gift card amount on the POS.
- Collect any remaining balance using another payment method.
- Return to the Birchmount portal and record the amount redeemed.
Troubleshooting
Error: Invalid PIN
If you enter a gift card number and PIN and receive an "Invalid PIN" error — even though the card balance appears — the issue is with the employee PIN entered on the previous screen, not the gift card PIN.
Go back and re-enter the correct employee PIN, then try again.
Voids, Cancellations, and Reversals
⚠️ Important: Once Apply Gift Card is processed, the balance is immediately deducted from the card. Voiding or cancelling the transaction in Dutchie POS will not automatically return funds to the gift card. You must complete a manual reversal in the Birchmount portal.
How to Reverse a Transaction
- In Dutchie POS, go to the customer's transaction history and select the items to refund.
- Toggle Cash Returned to No.
- Open the Birchmount portal.
- On the Lookup screen, scan or enter the card number and run the lookup.
- Find the transaction in the Transaction History section at the bottom of the page.
- Click the X icon under the Action column and follow the prompts to complete the reversal.
- Add a customer note in Dutchie POS to inform accounting that no cash was returned and the refund was applied back to the gift card.
🆕 Gift Card Stacking — Apply Multiple Gift Cards to One Order

Gift card stacking is an upcoming enhancement to the Birchmount integration. It is currently in testing and not yet available at all locations. This section is provided for awareness and training preparation only.
Gift card stacking will allow customers to apply up to 3 Integrated Gift Cards to a single order. Today, customers with multiple gift cards must use an alternate payment method for any remaining balance when their first card doesn't cover the full total. Stacking eliminates that friction.
How It Will Work
- Up to 3 gift cards can be applied to a single transaction.
- Waterfall logic: Card 1 is fully drained before Card 2 is applied, and so on.
- Partial amounts: You can edit the amount applied from any card before tapping Apply Gift Card.
- Applied card summary: Each applied card will display its last four digits and the amount applied so you can track what's been used.
- Remaining balance: If the gift cards don't cover the full order total, collect the remainder using another accepted payment method such as cash.
- Full coverage: If the gift cards cover the entire order amount, close out the order — no additional payment needed.
What's Not Supported
- Gift card activations and reloads remain handled through the Birchmount portal — this update only affects redemption at the register.

Reporting
Closing Report
The total of all redeemed gift cards — both integrated and non-integrated — appears on the Closing Report under Payment Summary > Gift Card.
Payments Report
The Payments Report shows gift card redemptions at the order level.
- Run the report for your desired date range.
- Filter by Payment Method = Gift Card or Split, or filter by Gift Paid ≠ $0.00.
- The External Payment ID column displays the Birchmount order number. This matches the order number in the Birchmount Redemption Report (export required), allowing you to reconcile orders between Dutchie POS and Birchmount.
