Round change due or transaction totals up or down automatically

Dutchie has several optional settings to automatically round change due or transaction total up or down to the nearest nickel (5-cent increment) so you can avoid the need for pennies in your register tills, as well as options to round down to the nearest quarter, dollar, or five-dollar increment.

Things to consider

  • Check your state and local regulations about what, if any, automatic rounding of transaction totals or change due is allowed. Dutchie provides several options to support different rules in different areas.
  • Be sure to select only one of the options described below. Enabling multiple rounding settings could result in unexpected rounding in the Register.
  • If you have enabled the Only Discount Cannabis Items to a minimum of $0.01 setting (in the Point of Sale section), there is an additional setting to enable in the Rounding section to ensure your rounding setting does not allow for a $0.00 transaction total.
  • Dutchie support can configure your registers to round by larger increments including quarters or dollars. See Additional rounding options below.

Rounding settings and how they work

In the Backoffice, go to Settings > Location and scroll to the Rounding section.

Select one of the following settings and click Save.

Round transaction total DOWN to quarter

Example: $10.49 rounds to $10.25

Applies to all payment types.

Round transaction total DOWN to dollar

Example: $10.99 rounds to $10.00

Applies to all payment types.

Round cash change due to NEAREST nickel

Example: $0.12 rounds to $0.10; $0.13 rounds to $0.15.

Applies to cash payments only.

Round transaction total to NEAREST dollar

Round transaction total DOWN to fiver

Example: $24.99 rounds to $20.00

Applies to all payment types.

Alternatively, you can enable Round transactions down to nearest fiver (Mobile Checkout), which only applies to Mobile Checkout transactions. This makes it so delivery drivers don't have to carry $1 bills or any coins. Find this option in the Mobile Checkout section of the Location Settings page.

Round cash change due DOWN to the nickel

Example: $0.49 rounds to $0.45

Applies to cash payments only.

Round transaction total DOWN to the nickel

Example: $10.99 rounds to $10.95

Round transaction total UP to the nickel

Example: $10.47 rounds to $10.50

Applies to all payment types.

Round transaction total to NEAREST nickel

Example: $10.47 rounds to $10.45; $10.48 rounds to $10.50.

Applies to all payment types.

Round cash change due UP to the nickel

Example: $0.06 rounds to $0.10

Applies to cash payments only.

Require $0.01 minimum when rounding is enabled

This option prevents transaction totals from being rounded to $0.00 when one of the above rounding settings is enabled.

Make sure you also have Only Discount Cannabis Items to a minimum of $0.01 (in the Point of Sale section of the Location Settings page) to prevent rounding down to $0.00.

How it looks in the Register

If you enable one of the settings that rounds the transaction total, the rounding is reflected in the order total before selecting Checkout.
