This article explains how to add items to a customer's pre-order in the Dutchie Register, even after your team has already picked and packed the original order. It applies to the Dutchie Register and is most relevant to people who configure the feature for their location.
Adding an item to a pre-order after fulfillment has already started to create confusion at the Backoffice. If a budtender scanned a new item into the cart, the register would warn that the item was not part of the order. If the location reprinted the pick ticket, the back of house received the entire order again with no indication of which items were actually new.
This feature removes that friction. A budtender can add items to a pre-order at any point before checkout, even after the original order has been picked. When the budtender saves the change, the back of house receives a pick ticket that lists only the newly added items: new products at their full quantity, and quantity increases showing just the increase. Once the added items are picked and handed to the budtender, they scan into the cart without any "item not in order" warnings, and checkout proceeds as normal on a single transaction.
This is useful for Budtenders working the guest list or cart, for Inventory Specialists who fulfill pick tickets in the back of house, and for Dispensary Managers or General Managers who need to configure the location settings that control this behavior.
Before you begin
- A separate, per-location setting called Enable new items pick ticket controls only the printing behavior. You will find it in Dutchie Backoffice under Settings > Location, on the Settings tab, in the Point of Sale section. This setting only appears in Backoffice once the LaunchDarkly flag is on for that customer.
- Administrator permission level is required to view or change the Enable new items pick ticket setting.
- No new print settings were added for this feature. Auto-printing of the new-items ticket uses the location's existing Pre-Order print settings (a print trigger plus a fulfillment printer) for each order type.
How adding items to a pre-order works
The budtender's starting point is a checked-in guest with a pre-order, on the cart page for that guest. There are two ways into the feature:
- From the cart, tap the “⋯” menu next to Add items in the cart header, then select Add fulfillment items.
- From the guest list, use the “⋯” menu on a pre-order's card and select Edit pre-order. This option appears for any pre-order once the feature is rolled out, including delivery orders.
Both paths open the Edit Pre-Order page. What the budtender sees on that page depends on how far along the order is.
Mode 1: Editable order
If the order can still be edited, the entire order remains open for changes. Every item shows quantity steppers and a trash icon, so the budtender can adjust quantities, remove items, or add new ones. After saving, the budtender uses Print > Print new items from the cart menu to send Backoffice a ticket that reflects only the changes.
Mode 2: Add-only order
If the original order can no longer be changed, or if items have already been added to it once before, the page opens in add-only mode. A banner explains that fulfillment has already started, that the budtender can still add items, and that back of house will be notified to pick them. Existing items appear as read-only, with no steppers or trash icons. Only new items can be added.
To add items in this mode:
- Tap Add items and search for products in the product search panel.
-
Set the quantity for each new product. The new items appear as editable rows below the existing, read-only items, and the order total updates to include everything.

- Tap Save changes. The budtender returns to the screen they started from (the cart, if they came from Add fulfillment items, or the guest list, if they came from Edit pre-order). Tapping Cancel returns the budtender to the same place without saving.

What you see in Dutchie Backoffice
How the pick ticket reaches Backoffice depends on the location's print settings.
- If the order type's Pre-Order print settings use a "Pre-order submit" trigger with a fulfillment printer configured, a pick ticket listing only the newly added items prints automatically the moment the budtender saves changes in add-only mode.
- If auto-print is not configured, the budtender taps Print > Print new items in the cart. This produces the same result: a ticket showing only what changed since the last successful print. The register waits for the printer to confirm the ticket actually printed before marking it as printed, so a failed print will not cause changes to be lost. Any items that did not print successfully will appear on the next Print new items ticket.
On the ticket itself, new products print at their full quantity, and increased quantities print only the increase. Removed or decreased items do not appear on the ticket.
Finishing the order
- Backoffice picks the newly added item or items and brings them to the budtender.
- The budtender scans the items into the cart as usual. No "item is not in the customer's order" warning appears, because the added items are already part of the pre-order.
- Checkout proceeds as normal, and the entire order, original and added items together, closes on one transaction.
Troubleshooting
Q: I don't see "Add fulfillment items" in the cart menu. Why not? The cart may not have a pre-order attached (the option only appears for pre-orders), or the order may be a delivery order, for which this option is intentionally hidden.
Q: The edit page lets me change existing quantities. I thought this was add-only? A: This is expected behavior. It means the order had not yet been locked in by fulfillment, so the whole order was still open for changes. Additions still reach back of house the same way, through Print new items.
Q: The printed ticket shows the whole order, not just the new items. Why? A: The first print of any order is always a full ticket, since that print establishes what has already been sent to back of house. Only prints after that show just the changes. If every print continues to show the full order, check the Enable new items pick ticket location setting. With this setting off, every print is a full ticket by design, though adding items still works normally.
Q: Nothing printed automatically when the budtender saved changes. What happened? A: Auto-print only occurs if the location's Pre-Order print settings use a "Pre-order submit" trigger with a fulfillment printer configured for that order type. If that trigger is not set, printing is manual. The budtender needs to use Print > Print new items in the cart.
Q: Can a budtender remove items after fulfillment has started? A: No. Once fulfillment has started, the Edit Pre-Order page is add-only by design. Corrections to items that have already been picked need to happen in the cart as usual.
