Buy More Save More: tiered discount type

This article is for anyone who creates and manages promotions in Dutchie POS.

Buy More Save More (BMSM) is a tiered discount type in the Dutchie POS pricing engine that lets you configure a single discount with multiple reward tiers based on a spending, item quantity, or weight threshold. For example, you can set up one discount that gives customers 5% off at 5 grams, 10% off at 10 grams, and 20% off at 12 grams, all within a single discount record.

Before this feature, achieving that same scaling structure required creating and managing several separate, individual discounts, one for each tier. Buy More Save More consolidates that structure into a single discount so you have less to create, edit, and track.

For a Dispensary Manager or General Manager, this means fewer discounts to manage and less risk of configuration errors. For a Marketing Director or Manager, this means simplified budget tracking and reporting, since all tiers roll up under one discount rather than several. For a Director of Retail, this unlocks more sophisticated promotional strategies designed to encourage larger basket sizes.

Common use cases include:

  • Quantity-based tiers: Buy 2 eighths for 10% off, buy 4 eighths for 20% off.
  • Spend-based tiers: Spend $100 and get $10 off, spend $200 and get $25 off.
  • Weight-based tiers: Buy 5 grams for 5% off, 10 grams for 10% off, 12 grams for 20% off.

Before you begin

  • A multi-tier discount is currently limited to a single requirement type (for example, Minimum Weight or Minimum Items), with multiple threshold breaks defined within that one requirement.
  • A multi-tier discount must have at least two tiers, and each tier's threshold must be strictly higher than the one before it.
  • A multi-tier discount cannot stack with itself, even if the discount is set to stack automatically. Your cart receives the reward for the single highest tier it qualifies for, not the sum of every tier it passes through.
  • A multi-tier discount is not compatible with a requirement of "No condition." Each discount needs a defined requirement with tier breaks.

Create a multi-tier discount

You configure a Buy More Save More discount using the Discount Wizard in your Dutchie Backoffice. The wizard fans out your single form into multiple linked discount records behind the scenes, so you only manage one discount in your list even though the system stores each tier as a separate, linked record.

  1. From Dutchie Backoffice Admin, go to Marketing > Discounts.
  2. Click Create Discount.

  3. Set the Application Method (for example, Automatic) and complete the Configure and Details steps as you would for a standard discount.
  4. On the Requirements tab, check the box for This is a multi-tiered discount. A tooltip provides more information on how multi-tier discounts work.

  5. Choose your requirement type. You can use only one requirement type per multi-tier discount, such as Minimum Weight.
  6. Add a tier break for each threshold you want to reward, making sure each break is strictly higher than the one before it. For example, 5 grams, 10 grams, and 12 grams.
  7. Go to the Rewards tab. The system displays a reward field for each tier break you defined on the Requirements tab. Enter the reward value (for example, Percent Off) for each tier: 5%, 10%, and 20%.
  8. Complete the Online step if you want the discount to sync to Dutchie E-Commerce.
  9. Review your configuration on the Summary step, then click Create discount.

If you already have several individual discounts that form a tiered structure, you can recreate them as tier breaks within a single multi-tier discount instead of maintaining them separately.

How the register applies tiers

At the register, the system totals the qualifying measure in the cart (weight, item count, or spend, depending on your requirement type) and applies the reward for the highest tier that total has reached. It does not add the rewards from lower tiers on top of each other.

For example, with tier breaks at 5 grams (5% off), 10 grams (10% off), and 12 grams (20% off):

  • A cart with 3 grams does not meet the lowest threshold and receives no discount.
  • A cart with 6 grams crosses the 5 gram threshold and receives 5% off.
  • A cart with 9 grams still qualifies only for the 5% tier, since it has not reached 10 grams.
  • A cart with 12 grams jumps directly to the 20% tier. The cart skips the 10% tier entirely because it crossed straight from below 10 grams to at or above 12 grams in a single addition.
  • Adding more units beyond the highest tier's threshold keeps the reward at that highest tier's rate; it does not continue to scale up further.

Edit tier rewards

You can adjust the reward amounts for an existing multi-tier discount without deleting and recreating it.

  1. Go to Marketing > Discounts and open the multi-tier discount you want to edit.
  2. Go to the Rewards tab.
  3. Update the reward value for one or more tiers. You can keep your existing tier breaks and change only the reward amounts, for example changing 5%, 10%, and 20% to 10%, 20%, and 50%.
  4. Click Update. The register reflects the new reward amounts immediately.

How multi-tier discounts appear in your discount list

Your Backoffice discount list displays only the parent discount for a multi-tier promotion. The individual tiers exist as linked records behind that parent, but the system hides them from the list view to keep your discount list clean.

Archiving the parent discount also archives its linked tiers. If you need to unarchive a multi-tier discount, the unarchive drawer populates with all of its tiers.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I save my multi-tier discount?
Check that you have at least two tier breaks configured and that each break's threshold is strictly higher than the one before it.

Why is the system rejecting my tier configuration?
Confirm you are using only one requirement type for the discount. During this rollout phase, a multi-tier discount cannot mix requirement types, such as combining a weight-based tier with a spend-based tier.

Why didn't my cart get the combined reward from every tier it passed through?
A multi-tier discount does not stack with itself, even when the discount is set to stack automatically. Your cart receives the reward for the single highest tier it qualifies for, not the sum of the tiers below it.

Why did my cart skip a tier and jump straight to a higher discount?
If the total weight, item count, or spend in your cart increases past a tier's threshold in a single addition, without stopping between thresholds, the register applies the higher tier directly. This is expected behavior, not an error.

Why don't I see the "This is a multi-tiered discount" checkbox?
